About the Gorge
The Columbia Gorge is up to 4,000 feet deep and stretches from the Cascade range to the outskirts of the city of Portland. The gorge is known for having thousands of petroglyphs; Horsethief Butte has more than anyplace else in the Northwest.
The gorge has had habitation by humans for over 13,000 years. It is known that Asians crossed the land bridge at the Bering Strait and the Folsom and Marmes people were here as long as 13.000 years ago. Archeological digs near Cililo Falls has shown evidence of 10,000 year old fishing communities. Indian caves have also been found in the basalt cliffs along the Columbia.
Waterfalls in the Columbia Gorge
There are 45 well known waterfalls in the Gorge and 77 waterfalls on the Oregon side alone. Multnomah is the most popular and most accessible falls in the Gorge. The falls are a short 30 minute drive east of Portland on I-84. The falls can be seen from the highway but a great paved walkway takes you a bridge that lets you look down on the lower falls and out at the main falls and pool below. You can also opt for a longer hike to the top.
Here is a list of some popular waterfalls in the Columbia Gorge.

Whatever happened to Wahclella Falls being one of the favorite waterfalls in the Gorge?
Thanks for noticing that. Wachlella Falls is, for sure, one of the best in the Gorge.
