Cycling the Columbia Gorge Highway

The Historic Columbia River Gorge Highway has many areas that offer great opportunities to road bike.  Cycling along the highway is great almost anywhere from Portland to the Dalles.  This ride starts in the  Dalles and and climbs through Mosier to Hood river and back.  The entire ride is just over 50 miles and follows lesser traveled parts of the Gorge.  The course is hilly and mixes long flat stretches after the  Dalles with hills climbing in and out of Hood River.   This ride is great in late fall to Spring because there is substantially less rain in this region of the Columbia Gorge.  You can often get warm sunny weather here if it is raining in Portland.

You can park in the Dalles at several public lots near 10th street.  Most public lots allow parking.  You can alternately start at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center, park, enjoy the facilities and view of the river, and start the ride.  Our Interactive map’s icon routes you here to start but some like to start this ride in town.  You will ride with the directions below to Hood river then loop around town and return back.  Views of the River are great.

If you scroll over the little yellow man icon in the  upper left of the map above, you can drag him until the map is highlighted in blue and scroll over the roads you will bike on this ride.  This will give you a street view of the ride so you  can advance the view over your entire ride.  Pretty cool huh?

Fun Fact

Also, Google’s server farm is located less than one mile from the start of this ride.  Virtually everything searched by Googele on the interwebs is stored in these buildings in the Dalles.  This means when you’re using their and our cool map API for this ride,  it’s probably gone through their Dalles server farm.
