Frenches Dome Hike and Climbing

Frenches Dome is located Mt Hood and is a popular rock climbing area for Portlanders as well as a very short hike–actually its more of a .5 mile hike around the rock.  even though the hike here is limited it is worth checking out this fantastic geologic feature.  Frenches Dome is the remnants of an old volcano’s neck.  A 100 foot high column made of basalt stone is left in the forest.

Rock Climbing at Frenches Dome

Routes and climbs here range from 5.5 to 5.13a.  They are well-bolted climbs that are one rope length and offer great opportunities for sport climbing in a very secluded setting deep in a pine forest with Mt Hood looming right over you. The routes follow a 360 degree wall and are located all around the dome.  Most of the grades are 5.10 and up but there are a few climbs tat are 5.7, 5.8 and 5.6.
